Executive News Editor
July 2004-August 2011
Austin American-Statesman, Austin, TX
I supervised 35 copy editors, wire editors and designers responsible for editing, presentation and timely production of all sections of the daily newspaper.
As an experienced journalist and newsroom leader, I upheld strong news values while solving staffing and logistical issues.
My responsibilities to maintain efficiencies and editing standards spread throughout the newsroom operation and I frequently was cited for anticipating and solving problems before they became critical.
I oversaw the transition from individual production desks to a universal desk by building consensus and fostering buy-in.
Developing strong editors with headline skills, crisp editing and thoughtful news judgment was important when downsizing.
I initiated in-house cross-training and additional enrichment in areas such as Search Engine Optimization and Alternative Story Forms.
My staff won numerous industry honors including national headline awards from the American Copy Editors Society 7 of the last 9 years.
Throughout my career, I coached and mentored many staffers who were promoted to positions of responsibility throughout the newsroom.
